Vāra: The Day of the Week as the Residence of Fire

The first of the five limbs of the Pañcāñga.

The word "Vāra" is a contraction of "Vāsara": a residence for Agni, the god of fire. "Vāsa" means to stay, to hold, to remain. "Ra" is a reference to fire itself — the same root the Egyptians used to name the Sun.

Vāra is the limb of the Pañcāñga connected to the agni tattva, the fire element. This is why it governs our vital energy, our vitality, and our health. Tradition says its study brings the blessing of a longer life — because when we understand the fire that lives within us, we can tend to it.

Agni is also the vehicle between the worshipper and the Devata, between the human and the divine. So the day of the week speaks not only of the body: it speaks of the energetic quality of the time you arrived into this world.

The Vareśa: the lord of your day

Every day of the week is ruled by a planet. We call that planet the Vareśa — the lord of the day, the ruler of the Vāra. Only the seven planets with a physical body rule the days. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, have no body — they are shadow entities, extremes of the mind — and so they fall outside this rulership.

Fire in the body

In the body, Agni lives in the stomach. It is the digestive fire — the capacity to transform food into nourishment and to separate what nourishes from what must be eliminated. When the digestive fire is strong, it removes toxins from the body. When it is weak, what Ayurveda calls ama accumulates: unprocessed matter, toxin, untransformed residue.

The Vareśa and its position in your birth chart speak directly to the state of that fire in you.

When the Vareśa is well placed in the chart, the body tends to be strong: good digestion, good energy, sustained vitality. When it is weak or afflicted, the fire drops. Ama appears. Physiological health suffers.

Two planets of fire

Of all the planets, two are especially relevant when we speak of fire in the chart.

The *Sun* represents the light that fire radiates — vitality, general health, the energy that illuminates. It rules the sign of Leo. We can study the relationship between the Vareśa and the sign of Leo, and between the Vareśa and the fifth house (Leo in the natural zodiac), to understand the state of the native's vital energy.

*Mars* represents fire as an element in itself — strength, heat, direct action. It rules the signs of Aries and Scorpio. Studying the Vareśa from the first house (Aries in the natural zodiac) and from the eighth house (Scorpio in the natural zodiac) shows us the strength of our body, and its capacity to transform (eighth house) food and process residue.

From birth to the auspicious moment

Beyond the birth chart, the Vāra has an immediate practical application: each day carries the energy of the planet that rules it, and that energy guides us toward the kinds of activities that are most auspicious at a given time. This is the seed of what in Jyotish we call muhurta — the choice of the auspicious moment to begin an activity.
