Pancha = five. Anga = limb.
The Pañcāñga is a lunisolar Vedic calendar of five limbs that define the quality of a moment — including the quality of the moment you were born.
In Vedic philosophy, time is not neutral. Time has a quality, a texture, a specific karmic charge. Just as the planets and their position in a birth chart indicate karma and the will of God, the Pañcāñga represents how we interact with that karma.
A human being interacts with physical reality through the senses and the five elements (water, fire, earth, air, and akash — space); through its five limbs, each connected to an element, the Pañcāñga shows us the quality of the moment we are living.
The five limbs
| Limb | What it measures | Element | Governs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vāra | The day of the week | Agni / fire | Vital energy and health |
| Tithi | The lunar phase | Jala / water | Emotional well-being and relationships |
| Karaṇa | The lunar half-day | Prithivi / earth | The capacity to materialize and complete |
| Nakṣatra | The lunar mansion | Vayu / air | Longevity and the measure of life |
| Yoga | The solar-lunar combination | Akasha / ether | Union with the divine |
The five limbs of the Pañcāñga derive from the Sun and the Moon: the two great luminaries that hold time together. The Sun represents the Father, Shiva; the Moon, the Mother, Parvati. The quality of time is born from their constant relationship.
The blessing of each limb
The study of each limb carries its own blessing: studying the Vāra prolongs life. Understanding the Tithi brings prosperity. The Karaṇa grants success and the ability to complete tasks. The Nakṣatra removes sins. The Yoga bestows immunity to illness.
Next, we explore each limb in detail, beginning with the first: Vāra, the day of the week as the residence of fire.
